Tech Nerd Adalah – Computer scientists have long stopped considering themselves as “it is a passion”. However, representative men and some blindness to the structural distinction of women remain.
Computer science is famous for being science in the 21st century, and ETH is one of its top forces. It provides young students with tools to shape the future of the world. In fact, according to higher education newspaper, ETH is currently ranked number two worldwide. [1] However, when checking more carefully, it is found that only 13.1% of all students at the Faculty of ETH’s computer science are women. [2]

To find out why the number of female computer science students is so low and which masculine type is found in the Faculty of ETH’s computer science, I have checked through an informal online question that some male and female computer science students at ETH on how they feel their parts and prejudices attached to it and their efforts to create a more equal environment.

Over the past few decades and through the appearance of technology giants such as Apple and Microsoft and the growing importance of computer science in our daily lives, common awareness of career has changed. Computer science has changed from a boring activity, Nerdy is done by men who are not hygienic in the dark bedroom for a new job. The change in this awareness is caused by people like Mark Zuckerberg, Bill Gates and Steve Jobs have led to society to see computer scientists not only nerd, creating a masculine “Silicon Valley”, as a bridge, how social students and ETH are aware of computer scientists. Of the 45 computer science students I checked, there were nine female and 35 male bachelor students and a male master’s student. The purpose of this study is to understand the perception of the computer science department from the inside and the way the computer science students of ETH see themselves, their community and their female colleagues or rather without it. When asked how masculine (on the scale of one to ten; one = very feminine, ten = very masculine), students believe that the atmosphere in their faculties, most of the respondents (34%) are with eight and 23% of students that it is ripe, showing that students are aware of a high masculine climate. Interestingly, as a quick look in Figure 1, men think that the environment is a bit more masculine than women with most women who consider it seven. The main reason for this assessment seems to be the overly representation of men in the department, maybe in the form of male students, male teaching assistant or male professor. It is worth noting that the support of the Faculty was erected as a female characteristic of a quarter of all students, while 17% of men believe that even male students show the female quality with a writer: “The boys are quite feminine”.

This feminine feeling seems to be a long -known problem in the awareness of scientists in general. Completely outstanding is the fact that some men also consider their computer science society to be smarter than colleagues of different research areas, as close and arrogant. On the other hand, women seem to believe that the stereotypical view of computer science students is still a current representative and accurately contradicts the opinions of male students, with 48% considering it quite wrong and a story about the past that the media and film industries continue to spread. However, more than half of the students believe that computer scientists at ETH certainly do not oppose social and faculties with all different cultures and people. This shows that computer science students move further from the image grown in the beginning of society, especially in terms of cultural and social foundation. It proves that from an internal angle, there are some masculine types.
The Reality Of Being A Computer “nerd”
Another interesting fact is that a part of a man answered “no” when asked if many women should study computer science. The reason behind this answer is because they do not think that it will be true when forcing women to study something they are not interested. It seems that these men automatically think that women do not care, and therefore do not want to study computer science with some people who make it clear that they do not believe that “… hobby of learning from society”.
Although these men may think they support equality, it is clear that they do not know the fact that society is really playing an important role in research options and today it is still a contributor to the lack of women in the fields of STEM. [8]
This means that we teach and conditions for girls in a certain direction through the division of toys, role models and many other factors. Technical industries are more related to men and men, creating a masculine atmosphere and frustrated girls participating. Even at ETH’s Faculty of Computer Science, seemingly inviting everyone, only two female professors sent a pretty clear message to all universities that although computer science accepted them, they were not very welcome.
The ETH network for women in computer science (CSNOW) regularly encourages female high school students to regain computer science by inviting them to participate in specialized lectures and events.
